Measurement¶
Stage: Publish → AI Search Optimization
Score: 3
Evidence: practitioner observation, emerging tooling
What It Is¶
Measuring whether your owned media content is being discovered, cited, and surfaced by AI search systems. This is an emerging discipline — the tools are immature, but the signals are already trackable.
Why It Matters¶
If you cannot measure AI search visibility, you cannot improve it. Traditional SEO metrics (rankings, click-through rates, impressions) do not capture whether your content is being cited in AI-generated answers.
What To Measure¶
1. Direct Signals¶
Metrics you can observe directly.
| Metric | How to Track | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overview appearances | Google Search Console → Search Appearance | Whether your content appears in AI Overviews |
| Perplexity citations | Search your brand/episode titles on Perplexity | Whether Perplexity cites your content |
| ChatGPT mentions | Ask ChatGPT about your topics with browsing enabled | Whether ChatGPT surfaces your content |
| Bing Copilot citations | Search your topics on Bing with Copilot | Whether Bing Copilot cites you |
| Referral traffic from AI sources | Google Analytics → Referral traffic from perplexity.ai, bing.com/chat, chatgpt.com | Direct traffic from AI platforms |
2. Proxy Signals¶
Indicators that correlate with AI visibility.
| Metric | How to Track | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Rich results eligibility | Google Rich Results Test | Whether your structured data is valid |
| Crawl coverage | Google Search Console → Indexing | Whether your pages are being crawled and indexed |
| Featured snippets | Search Console → Search Appearance | Whether Google selects your content for direct answers (AEO) |
| Schema validation | schema.org validator | Whether your markup is parseable |
| Transcript indexing | site:yoursite.com + topic query | Whether transcript content appears in search results |
3. Competitive Signals¶
How you compare to others in your space.
| Metric | How to Track | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Category queries | Search "[your topic]" on Perplexity/ChatGPT/Google AI | Who gets cited for your category |
| Guest queries | Search "[guest name] [topic]" across AI platforms | Whether your episode appears for guest-related queries |
| Brand queries | Search "[your show name]" across AI platforms | Whether AI systems know your show exists |
Measurement Cadence¶
| Frequency | Action |
|---|---|
| Weekly | Check referral traffic from AI sources in analytics |
| Monthly | Run 10-15 category queries across Google AI, Perplexity, ChatGPT; document who gets cited |
| Quarterly | Full audit: schema validation, crawl coverage, AI citation tracking, competitive benchmarking |
| Per episode | Verify structured data, check indexing within 48 hours, test 2-3 relevant queries |
Tools¶
| Tool | Use |
|---|---|
| Google Search Console | AI Overview appearances, crawl status, indexing |
| Google Analytics / GA4 | Referral traffic from AI sources |
| Google Rich Results Test | Schema validation |
| Perplexity.ai | Manual citation checking |
| ChatGPT (browsing mode) | Manual citation checking |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Bing crawl status, Copilot indexing |
| Ahrefs / Semrush | Featured snippet tracking, competitive analysis |
| Custom scripts | Automated query testing across AI platforms |

When Not To Use¶
Always measure. Even if the numbers are small today, establishing baselines now lets you track the growth of AI as a discovery channel for your content.
The Honest State of AI Measurement (May 2026)¶
This discipline is early. Most tools are manual. Automated AI citation tracking is still emerging. The platforms themselves are changing how they cite, how often they cite, and what content they prefer.
The Index will update this section as tooling matures. For now, the best approach is manual tracking with a simple spreadsheet: query, platform, was your content cited (yes/no), who was cited instead.
